Green-lipped mussel

Whole mussel powder from New Zealand with glycosaminoglycans, omega-3 fatty acids and minerals. One of the best-studied joint ingredients for dogs.

Why this grade: For dogs, several randomised placebo-controlled trials with positive results, one of them measured on a force plate (Bierer & Bui 2002, Pollard 2006, Hielm-Björkman 2009). The 2022 meta-analysis by Barbeau-Grégoire does not grade the mussel on its own but together with omega-3, which it finds effective; an older review (Vandeweerd 2012) still rated the evidence as weak. For cats there is one randomised trial in which the mussel was given together with fish oil, so it is only partly supported there.

• Dog25–50 mgBasis: Bierer & Bui 2002 (J Nutr 132:1634S, PubMed 12042477), randomisiert, doppelblind und kontrolliert über sechs Wochen. Die Spanne 25–50 mg/kg ist die übliche Dosierung für Grünlippmuschelpulver; der Volltext ist kostenpflichtig, wir konnten sie dort nicht nachlesen. Andere Quellen nennen 77 mg/kg als wirksame Menge und 25 mg/kg als wirkungslos. Die Metaanalyse von Barbeau-Grégoire et al. 2022 fand dagegen keinen Zusammenhang zwischen Dosis und Wirkung, ordnet Grünlippmuschel aber der wirksamen Omega-3-Gruppe zu (d = 1,19). Die Menge bleibt damit unbestätigt, die Wirkrichtung ist belegt.
• Cat25–50 mgBasis: Aus dem Hundemodell abgeleitet, das selbst unbestätigt ist. Für die Katze liegen keine eigenen Dosisdaten vor.
