Omega-3 (EPA + DHA)

Evidence: Well supportedSkin & coatJoints & mobility

Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids from fish or algal oil. What counts is EPA and DHA: dogs and cats barely convert the ALA in plant oils.

Why this grade: The best-studied supplement for joints: the 2022 meta-analysis by Barbeau-Grégoire found a medium to large effect in dogs and cats, mostly from high-quality trials, with only 2 of 20 trials showing none. Vandeweerd 2012 had already named omega-3 in dogs as the one exception with solid evidence. For skin and coat there are also randomised trials with fish oil in dogs.

Worth knowing

High doses can affect blood clotting. The vitamin E requirement rises with them.
