Probiotics

Live micro-organisms, authorised in the EU as Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 10415 among others. They are dosed per animal rather than per kilogram: the trials give about 2 billion CFU a day. In cats the benefit is established; in dogs the largest trial found none.

Why this grade: For cats, one double-blind placebo-controlled trial with a positive result: fewer days of soft faeces with Enterococcus faecium SF68 (Bybee et al. 2011). In dogs the same trial found no difference, while smaller randomised trials report shorter digestive upsets. The evidence always belongs to a particular strain, never to probiotics in general.

KBE, wie sie Bybee et al. 2011 (JVIM 25:856, PubMed 21689152) gab: etwa 1 g Enterococcus faecium SF68 am Tag, im Labor mit 2,1 x 10^9 KBE je Gramm gemessen. Dieselbe doppelblinde, placebokontrollierte Studie mit 182 Hunden fand beim Hund keinen Effekt; kleinere Studien zu akutem Durchfall berichten eine kürzere Dauer. Die Menge ist belegt, der Nutzen beim Hund nicht.
• Cat2+ Mrd. KBEBasis: Feste Tagesmenge. Bybee et al. 2011 (JVIM 25:856, PubMed 21689152), doppelblind und placebokontrolliert mit 217 Katzen im Tierheim: etwa 1 g Enterococcus faecium SF68 am Tag, im Labor mit 2,1 x 10^9 KBE je Gramm gemessen, also rund 2,1 Mrd. KBE täglich. Durchfall über mehr als zwei Tage bei 7,4 % statt 20,7 % unter Placebo (p = 0,03).
