Taurine
Evidence: Dog: Traditional use · Cat: Well supportedGeneral wellbeingImmune support
Essential for cats. Complete foods contain it; raw and home-cooked rations have to have it added.
Why this grade: An essential nutrient for cats, which can make hardly any of their own; the requirement has been well studied since the 1980s (Pion et al. 1987). Dogs build taurine from other amino acids. What exists for dogs concerns particular breeds and rations rather than healthy dogs in general, so there it is only traditional.

Reference amount per kg per day
Products containing Taurine
Why there is no amount here
There is no reference amount for dogs, because taurine is not essential for them: a dog builds it from other amino acids. A cat can do so only to a very limited extent, which is why the amount here is for cats only.
