Taurine for cats. When it is needed and when you can skip it
Complete food covers a cat's taurine requirement. Supplementing becomes relevant with home-cooked and raw diets. The amounts in common use, and why cooking lowers the content.
Taurine is one of the few cases where the honest answer for most owners is: you probably do not need it. We are writing it up anyway, because the cases where it is needed are cleanly defined.
Why cats need taurine from outside
Taurine is essential for cats. Unlike dogs, they can synthesise it only to a very small degree, and it occurs almost exclusively in animal tissue. For a cat's body, taurine is a nutrient like a vitamin: it has to arrive through the food.
Who does not need to supplement
A complete food is by definition formulated to cover a cat's requirement in full, taurine included. Manufacturers add taurine deliberately, partly because some is lost in processing. A cat fed exclusively on commercial wet or dry food needs no extra dose. More of it adds nothing in that case.
Who should supplement
Taurine becomes relevant with home-prepared diets, raw or cooked, that use no ready-made supplement blend. Two reasons:
- Cooking and soaking lower the content. Taurine is water-soluble. What stays in the cooking water does not reach the bowl if the water is poured away.
- Not every meat delivers the same. Heart and dark poultry meat are high in it, lean muscle meat considerably lower.
As a reference we use 25 to 50 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, so roughly 100 to 250 mg for a 4 to 5 kg cat. In practice raw feeders often supplement at or above the top of that range, since taurine is well tolerated and an excess is excreted.
Practical notes
- Taurine powder is neutral in taste and mixes into wet food.
- Heat and long storage in damp conditions reduce the content. Keep it dry and dark, and mix it in shortly before feeding.
- Anyone feeding a home-prepared diet should have the whole ration worked through once. Taurine is only one of several critical nutrients, and a ration that is right on taurine can have gaps elsewhere.
Supplements are not a medicine. If you notice a change in your cat, it belongs with a vet first, however she is fed.
