Alpha-casozepine

Evidence: Dog: Traditional use · Cat: Some evidenceCalm & relaxation

A peptide from cow's milk protein, obtained by breaking casein down with the enzyme trypsin. It is the active ingredient in Zylkène and, for cats, the best-studied substance for stressful situations; for dogs the evidence is much weaker.

Why this grade: For cats, one multicentre randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial over 56 days with 34 cats at 15 mg per kg: clearly better behaviour scores than on placebo (Beata et al. 2007). For dogs, a knowledge summary in Veterinary Evidence concludes that there is no evidence of a short-term effect and only weak, low-quality evidence of a longer-term one, so there it is traditional.
