Ascophyllum nodosum (seaweed)

A brown alga said to act on the bacterial film on the teeth by way of the gut. For dogs there is one controlled 90-day trial; the manufacturer’s cat trials are unpublished, so we carry no reference amount for cats.

• Dog50+ mgBasis: Gawor et al. 2018 (Front Vet Sci 5:168, PMC6080642), doppelblind, randomisiert und placebokontrolliert über 90 Tage mit 60 Hunden: täglich ein Kaustück je kg Körpergewicht mit je 0,05 g Alge, also 50 mg/kg. Plaque und Zahnstein lagen danach niedriger als unter Placebo. Eine Koautorin arbeitet beim Hersteller. Eine Obergrenze ist nicht untersucht, die Zahl ist die geprüfte Menge und keine Empfehlung, mehr zu geben.

Worth knowing

The alga is naturally high in iodine. If your animal’s thyroid is under veterinary supervision, cats in particular, or if it is pregnant, ask your vet first.
