DL-methionine
A sulphur-bearing amino acid. What can be measured about it is urine pH: methionine is metabolised to sulphuric acid and excreted in the urine, which lowers its pH. The amounts at which that happens measurably are well above what most supplements deliver.
Why this grade: That methionine lowers urine pH has been measured in dogs and cats. Whether a lower pH helps a particular animal is not something the evidence says; pH is the only endpoint, and nothing beyond it is graded here.
„Methionine is metabolised to sulphuric acid and thereby lowers the pH of the urine.“
Reference amount per kg per day
Worth knowing
Do not add it on top of a food already formulated to lower urine pH: together they overshoot easily. Urine pH belongs measured rather than guessed, and that is a job for a vet.
