Crude fibre

Evidence: Some evidenceHairballs

Indigestible fibre, mostly cellulose. It binds swallowed hair and carries it through the gut instead of letting it collect in the stomach. It has been studied as a share of the whole diet, about 2.5 g a day for a cat; a paste delivers a small fraction of that, a food with added fibre most of it.

Why this grade: One double-blind placebo-controlled trial in cats: a dry food with 4 % added cellulose cut vomiting, retching and coughing from hairballs by 79, 91 and 70 % against the same food without it (Beynen et al. 2011, 12 cats each). A second study found more hair in the faeces with more fibre, but only in longhaired cats (Weber et al. 2015). A single clinical trial, so some evidence rather than well supported.
