Psyllium husk

Evidence: Dog: Traditional use · Cat: Some evidenceDigestion & gut

The seed husks of Plantago ovata. They bind many times their own weight in water and swell into a gel, which changes the amount and consistency of the faeces. This has been studied at around one gram per kg of body weight, far more than most supplements provide.

Why this grade: For cats, controlled studies: in a crossover trial, about 5 g of psyllium husk a day measurably changed how often and how firm the cats' faeces were (Keller et al. 2024), and a six-month controlled trial confirms it with an enriched food (Rochon et al. 2026). For dogs the data come from a retrospective case series without a control group (Leib 2000), so there it is traditional.

„swelling fibre that binds water and affects stool consistency“

Reference amount per kg per day

Worth knowing

Always give with plenty of water, or the husks swell in the gut instead of the bowl. Feed a little apart from tablets, as the gel can delay their uptake.
